STEMher by Ruby B Johnson Magazine Spring 2019 Ruby B Johnson 9781091389694 Books Reviews

  • I purchased my first issue after seeing a post about it on LinkedIn. The magazine is well written and provides profiles on women working in various STEM careers. The women that are profiled share their STEM journeys and advice. This magazine is a must read for any woman/girl interested in the STEM field. Being a woman in STEM, I wish I had this resource at the beginning of my career to see some positive role models and get some great advice. I really liked this magazine because it didn't focus primarily on women with a PhD. Women with varying levels of education were profiled. A great read! You won't be disappointed! I plan on ordering the 2 past issues!

In this epic tale of friendship and loss from the author of The Sugar Men, fate pushes childhood friends to opposite sides of a terrible war - but is forgiveness always possible?

Ukraine, 1923. On a small farm, two boys are born within days of each other, both Ukrainian, one Jewish. Mykhail and Asher grow up inseparable, together finding friendship, adventure and escape from the harshness of Russian rule. But after Asher's family flees to Warsaw, their worlds are torn to shreds by the Second World War.

The war brings cruelty to both boys. Although Asher finds love in Warsaw, the city is far from the haven his family sought; meanwhile Mykhail becomes a victim of the bitter struggle for Ukraine. But worse follows, in the shape of the Treblinka death camp. There, both men must obey orders, and both find their morals compromised and their souls tortured.

The inhuman horrors they witness cast long shadows. Many years later, their paths cross once more, and each man must confront the legacy of his actions. When the darkest of secrets can no longer be kept hidden, can their friendship survive the final reckoning?

"I had an inner debate with myself about my choice this month for the Amazon First read selection. Finally decided on this one and do believe that I made a good choice. Recently have been reading WW II novels so this was in the same time frame.

Two boys, Mykhail and Asher were born in 1923 in the Ukraine. Both lived on a farm and were neighbors. They were inseparable as youngsters until Asher's family moved to Warsaw in 1936. In 1939, the Ukraine made friends with Germany and the 'worm' started to turn.

For me, this novel is as much a study in human nature as it is in the complexity of war. Nothing remains the same and mankind suffers. The underlying theme is that there is always hope...sometimes one has to shut out the absolute horrors of existence in order to survive.

The descriptions of Warsaw and the Jewish district were stark and the inhabitants were nearly without hope. When the Treblinka death camp chapters were read, I had to take numerous breaks. The suffering of humanity was so overpowering to me.

A mystery is also added to this novel that takes place many years later in the US. For me, this also added to the human nature part of this story. I also liked the answer to the question of whether or not one is able to go 'home' again...Perfect...

All in all a gripping and harrowing novel for me. And, I am glad that I selected this one.

Highly recommended."

Beyond the Shadow of Night Audible Audio Edition Ray Kingfisher Jeremy Arthur Brittany Wilkerson Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

  • the lives of two Ukrainian boys are followed thru the horrors of WW2 to an unusual outcome. One lad is Jewish, the other isn’t and to start with, they don’t understand or care. They hear things their parents say but live their lives on the same farm as “brothers in every way but blood”.

As Hitler advances and the boys mature, the families separate and each young man is forced into situations that will effect his life for its entirety. The writing is gruesome at times just like the events of history. It’s not gratuitous or flagrant but filled with the emotions of the characters. It could have been more expansive considering the great characters in this story. Many of them were left undeveloped and I wanted to hear from them and know more about them.

I felt the same way about Warsaw. The author missed an opportunity to give the reader an immersive experience with regards to the Jewish area as there was very little descriptive prose. This happened with Treblinka as well. Both of these locations are pivotal to the story and deserved more attention from Mr. Kingfisher.

Woven into the historical fiction is a more contemporary mystery that pops up every 2-3 chapters. It has to do with an incident that occurs with one of the young men 60 years ago. The author handles this aspect fairly well and these chapters are delivered without being disruptive. The solving of this “mystery” isn’t really going to be a major surprise but it is an unusual element for an historical fiction novel.

“Beyond the Shadow of Night” is a decent read. The language is clean, there’s no gratuitous violence or sexual content📚

  • The story is about two Ukrainian friends, one of them a Jew. It starts just before WWII when they are just a boys, describes their lives as a young men during the war in Ukraine and Poland and then jumps to the time when they are both old and living in USA. I chose this book as my March free “first read” because I never read a book about WWII written from Ukrainian point of view. At the beginning of the war Ukraine was under Soviet Union occupation and some saw the approaching Hitler army as an opportunity for national freedom and supported the Nazis. Poland that was attacked in 1939 simultaneously by Germany and Soviet Union perceived both powers as deadly enemies.

The story is very dramatic and big part of it is about the impossible choices that had to be made by average people during the war time. The most shocking events are taking place in the Treblinka death camp and these are images that may be difficult for the reader to erase from the mind. The message here is that extremely cruel circumstances may strip almost everybody from humanity and reduce most people to the level of animals driven only by their self-surviving instinct. As I believe this message to be true, I think that books like this one should be written and read by many so the history will not repeat itself. Kudos for the author for undertaking this difficult task. In order not to scare potential readers I have to add that book reads very smoothly, the life stories of both (fictional) main heroes are breath taking and there is even some romance commingled with the plot. This book is definitely worth reading.

    However….
The histories of Ukraine and Poland are extremely complicated and there is no time in the book to fully discuss the geopolitical situations and the events that are not directly connected to the main plot. So there are several understandable simplifications and short cuts. However some of them may result in the misleading picture of the broader historical content. Some clarifying sentences added here and there and mentioning some important key events and/or describing the situation in more detail would be helpful. For example Both main protagonist live on the private and relatively prosperous farm in Ukraine until just before war. But there was a mass collectivization of agricultural land on Ukraine in 1928-1932 and such individual farm was very unlikely to exist. So the picture of Ukraine the author is painting is misleading. If this imaginary farm was supposed to be some kind of exception from the general rule it should be explained how it survived. Similarly, during German bombing of Warsaw in 1939, the city citizens did not have to rely solely on rumors to learn about war progress. All this time there was a Polish radio broadcast that was played in many public places. These and some others “shortcuts” later on made me to lower my rating by one star.
  • Be careful about starting this book. You might not be able to set it down until you’ve finished the last chapter.
  • I had high hopes for this book as I am beginning to enjoy historical novels. I tried to get through it but gave up at page 70. The writing style is terrible. I felt that I was reading a first time short story by a thirteen year old.
  • I couldn't put it down!! I also learned a part of history I did not know about World War 2

On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over "Shangri-La," a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea .Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton's best-selling novel Lost Horizon, , this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals.

But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through. Margaret Hastings, barefoot and burned, had no choice but to wear her dead best friend's shoes. John McCollom, grieving the death of his twin brother also aboard the plane, masked his grief with stoicism. Kenneth Decker, too, was severely burned and suffered a gaping head wound.

Emotionally devastated, badly injured, and vulnerable to the hidden dangers of the jungle, the trio faced certain death unless they left the crash site. Caught between man-eating headhunters and enemy Japanese, the wounded passengers endured a harrowing hike down the mountainside - a journey into the unknown that would lead them straight into a primitive tribe of superstitious natives who had never before seen a white man - or woman.

Drawn from interviews, declassified U.S. Army documents, personal photos and mementos, a survivor's diary, a rescuer's journal, and original film footage, Lost in Shangri-La recounts this incredible true-life adventure for the first time. Mitchell Zuckoff reveals how the determined trio - dehydrated, sick, and in pain - traversed the dense jungle to find help; how a brave band of paratroopers risked their own lives to save the survivors; and how a cowboy colonel attempted a previously untested rescue mission to get them out.

By trekking into the New Guinea jungle, visiting remote villages, and rediscovering the crash site, Zuckoff also captures the contemporary natives' remembrances of the long-ago day when strange creatures fell from the sky. A riveting work of narrative nonfiction that vividly brings to life an odyssey at times terrifying, enlightening, and comic, Lost in Shangri-La is a thrill ride from beginning to end.

Lost in ShangriLa A True Story of Survival Adventure and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II Audible Audio Edition Mitchell Zuckoff HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • This book describes a real event during the island-hopping phase of WW2 in the Pacific. In the steep mountains of New Guinea, a hidden valley was home to a large population of natives who had no knowledge of the world beyond the valley--until it was spotted from the air by fliers stationed at air fields along the coast. Soon, the valley was the destination of sight-seeing flights, but these only flew over, the valley having no place for a safe air field, and the rim of the valley being near the altitude limit of the available aircraft. To reach the valley, the planes had to fly a twisted path through passes in the mountains. One day, an officer decides to reward his staff, including a number of WACs, with a trip to see the valley in a C47. Then the trouble starts! The pilot is the only one who is familiar with the complex route , and he soon is distracted by socializing with the passengers, leaving the plane to an inexperienced co-pilot. They fail to clear a ridge, and the result is a fiery crash. There are 3 survivors, two of whom have serious injuries. This book is the story of how they survived and finally got home, To do so, they had to make their location, well off the intended course, known to searchers; deal with their medical needs; and deal with the natives, who vastly out number them, and for whom the chief entertainment is war among their numerous clans! This book is well written, and can be read as an real-life adventure story. It is also a cautionary tale of how a pilot's inattention can lead to disaster. Reading the accident reports that appear in Aviation Week, it appears that this still has not been fully learned.
  • I couldn't put it down, check the valley area on your tablet and the story really comes to life. I had my iPad next to the book. The Shangri-La Valley is pretty easy to find, it's so isolated. There's an air strip there now, so they've been in touch with the outside world for awhile now.
Just after the crash, I couldn't get the story out of my head, so I had to finish it fast... Excellent, unforgettable book!
  • Living history at its greatest. This is an incredible story, a tribute to all those involved, and a fascinating study in the cultural collision between Western Civilization and a tribe of South Pacific islanders not very far removed from the Stone Age. Well written and obviously well researched, this is an account of a little known tempest in a remote corner of the proverbial teapot that was WWII in the Pacific. Perhaps the author's most significant achievement is his ability to tell this story in a relaxed and easily understood way while bringing to the fore in vivid mental images, the lush and unforgiving landscape, the nature and culture of the Dani people, as well as all the danger, fear, loss, uncertainty, courage, determination, and strength of will evidenced in this remarkable story.
  • This offering is filled with drama, the characters of this book HAD to live! Each scene, every chapter was a part of their lives, written on their souls! Now we, living in the 21 st century get to vicariously experience a small portion, of what it must have been like for them!
I found myself reading when I should have been asleep. I haven't done that since I was a child, hiding under the covers, reading by the dull glow of the flashlight, praying my mom wouldn't catch me, at least not until I finished the next chapter! She usually caught me!
Anyway, there's much to admire about these people, native and military, and the writer gives each person a complete fleshing out.
Even the smallest detail, culled from old records, or a personal recollection was given its own liveliness.
It took true grit to survive the incredible ordeal that was thrust upon them. They not only survived, they triumphed!
The most poignant of all the scenes portrayed, is the solemn funeral service held in air.
Not only did I thoroughly enjoy this book, I liked it so much, I sent it to a loved one as a present.
  • This book is different from the mystery novels I usually favor. A true story of the rescue of survivors of a military plane crash in New Guinea at the end of WWII. The author fills in so much background info of the main subjects of this event, along with historical information and a broad and fascinating story of the land and native people. Having been a military wife for 24 years, I appreciated the hardship and sacrifices made by all those involved and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
  • High in the mountains of New Guinea, lay a valley hidden from the world. The people there had lived for lifetimes secluded from the rest of the world. In 1945, they were "discovered" by a U.S. plane. When another plane filled with army personnel on a sightseeing flight crashed a few weeks later, the army had to come up with a way to get the survivors back home. Unable to land a plane, too dangerous to hike out, the only way to help the wounded was to send paratroopers in. They knew going in, though, that there was no clear exit strategy. I really appreciated all the anecdotes the author included, both tragic and humorous, that made this an enjoyable and interesting read.
  • I first got this book on my , but I wanted my brother to read it, so I bought the book for him. He also read "13 hours" by this author, also an excellent story. I had the best time reading this and the pictures of the people involved made me feel like I knew them personally. The rescue was so difficult for the time, it was amazing how much thought had to go into what nowadays would be fairly easy. I highly recommend this true story.

Tales from the Seattle Mariners Dugout A Collection of the Greatest Mariners Stories Ever Told Tales from the Team Kirby Arnold Books Reviews

  • I have an older version of this book published in 2007 so maybe the newer version is better. I am a huge mariners fan and thought this book felt more like a dry book report on the team. It didn't really go into depth in the highlights and things I was interested in. At times I felt that this book was even negative toward the Mariners organization. I just didn't feel it was a very well written book. Having said all this, I think it's a quick and easy read that gives you a brief overview of the organization if that's what you're looking for.
  • Great book! Perfect Father's Day gift .
  • My husband is a huge baseball/Mariners fan! He's enjoying the book immensely!
  • I absolutely loved reading this book and have even bought it as a gift. I recommend it to everyone that likes the Mariners. The way it is put together kept it fresh and interesting and I'll read it again and again!
  • I really enjoyed reading this! It brought back so many memories from '95, '97, and '01, as well as gave me new insight into the early years of the Mariners. Would have been nice if the publishers had worked with the author to update the book with its 2014 re-release, but I'm glad to know that was through no fault of the author.
  • The book is a delight. It's written for the average person, who may or may not be a baseball fan. There's not a lot of boring statistics. It's a look at the players and one particular remarkable coach. It made me laugh out loud, brought tears to my eyes and sometimes both at the same time. The book takes a look at the real people who have played inside the Seattle Mariners uniforms. Give it a chance just like we've given the Mariners a chance.
  • Nice read. Interesting facts

The first book in a funny, heartfelt, and irresistible young middle grade series starring an unforgettable young boy on the autism spectrum, from acclaimed author Elana K. Arnold and with illustrations by Charles Santoso.

For Bixby Alexander Tam (nicknamed Bat), life tends to be full of surprises-some of them good, some not so good. Today, though, is a good-surprise day. Bat's mom, a veterinarian, has brought home a baby skunk, which she needs to take care of until she can hand him over to a wild-animal shelter.

But the minute Bat meets the kit, he knows they belong together. And he's got one month to show his mom that a baby skunk might just make a pretty terrific pet.

"This sweet and thoughtful novel chronicles Bat's experiences and challenges at school with friends and teachers and at home with his sister and divorced parents. Approachable for younger or reluctant readers while still delivering a powerful and thoughtful story" (from the review by Brightly.com, which named A Boy Called Bat a best book of 2017).

"I read this and enjoyed it quite a bit; my 9yo ASD daughter LOVED it and demanded sequels immediately. She's an advanced reading 2E kid who normally reads at a a 5th grade level or above, but she really connected to this gentle story (other all-time favorite stories of hers are All-of-a-Kind Family and Beezus & Ramona). Bat was a big hit."

A Boy Called Bat Audible Audio Edition Elana K Arnold Patrick Lawlor HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • I recently read this book aloud to my son (an 8-year-old affected by ASD) as a bedtime story. At a pace of a few chapters each night, it took us about a week. This is a book that my son could have easily read independently; I'd guess that this story would be accessible to most kids reading around a third grade level.

From my perspective, this was a sweet (though not especially exciting or gripping) peek into the mind and life of a child with "high-functioning" autism. The author never explicitly states that the main character, Bat, is on the spectrum, but she devotes a lot of time to implying that he is by describing symptomatic behaviors and characteristics. To me, the thin plot made the story feel a bit flat, but I think that was one reason why my son loved it; the relative lack of conflict and tension makes the story feel comforting and stable.

My son really identified with Bat and frequently became excited by all of their commonalities a love for animals and facts about animals, divorced parents and the disruptions caused by shared custody, anxiety and sensory sensitivities, difficulty connecting with peers...even the sibling relationship between Bat and his neurotypical older sister. It was as if Bat had become the friend that my son has yet to make, and I know that reading about him made my child feel less isolated in the world. For that reason alone, this book was well worth the purchase.

I really love seeing a kiddo like Bat (and my own son) represented in children's literature, and I feel that the author did a wonderful job of portraying his quirks and needs in a fair, compassionate, and affirming manner. I'd definitely recommend this story to animal-loving kids who are (or know/love someone who is) affected by Aspergers-like ASD. Readers who do not fall within that specific category may have a little trouble feeling engaged by this particular book, but it was perfect for us.
  • Elana K. Arnold has written a delightful book that I really enjoyed reading. But I also found it an important book because the main character is what many would call neurodiverse or to be more specific autistic. While that is not stated specifically, it becomes clear in Bat's behavior that communicating with others is difficult for him. One thing that I especially appreciated is that Bat's difficulties are portrayed as just a natural part of him that he and his family live and work with. Bat's challenges aren't made out to be all there is to him. Bat's love for and fascination with animals shines through loud and clear as Bat tries to persuade his mom to let him care for an orphaned baby skunk until it's time to return it to the wild. The interactions between Bat and his classmates (he does go to a private school) and Bat and his sister Janie feel natural and real both the good and the bad.

In addition to having realistic characters and believable situations in regard to Bat, there is also the fact that Bat's parents are divorced and he spends every other weekend with his Dad. I loved how real this whole story felt and the way the animal facts and Bat's challenges are so beautifully woven together. This is a book that I think ALL elementary libraries should have and a great one for personal collections as well. Definitely going on my shelf of favorites.
  • Great book for anyone who would like to put themselves into the shoes of someone on the spectrum. All teachers should read this book because Bat's teacher rocks! He is kind and understanding but firm. Divorce is not easy for kids to process and A Boy Called Bat gives adults a kid's eye view.
  • I read this and enjoyed it quite a bit; my 9yo ASD daughter LOVED it and demanded sequels immediately. She's an advanced reading 2E kid who normally reads at a a 5th grade level or above, but she really connected to this gentle story (other all-time favorite stories of hers are All-of-a-Kind Family and Beezus & Ramona). Bat was a big hit.
  • Cute story introducing the characteristics of autism. I would recommend this story all. Whether you know about autism or not this is a great story!
  • Bat is a boy that all students should meet. His story is a great window into the world of a kid on the spectrum. I loved how his parents' divorce was portrayed in a positive light, and his relationship with his sister realistically has its ups and downs. His relationship with his skunk Thor is precious and something kids can relate to. I'm a fan and am sharing it with my students!
  • Written well. Great read. Eye opener to how kids "on the spectrum" view this world.
  • Such wonderful writing! You will feel like you are taking care of the baby skunk kit with Bat and his mom.
